A new method of memory recovery in neurodegenerative diseases
In the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ITEB RAS) and the Federal Research Center “Pushchino Scientific Center for Biological Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences” (PSCBR RAS), a non-invasive method of delivery of functionally active mitochondria to the brain by their intranasal administration was developed.

It is known that mitochondria are passed down the maternal line and are sources of energy («power» stations) of the body. The work shows that intranasal administration of isolated mitochondria leads to their penetration into various structures of the brain, including the neocortex and hippocampus - the regions responsible for learning and memory that are affected in Alzheimer's disease. The authors have shown that mitochondrial transplantation causes an improvement in memory in mice with induced neurodegeneration of the Alzheimer's type, a model of sporadic Alzheimer's disease. In 2019, the authors of the proposed method received a patent "Targeted non-invasive transplantation of functionally active mitochondria into the brain for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction" (RU2019127519 от 02.09.2019).

Authors of the patent, Honored Scientist, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Prof. Galina D. Mironova; PhD, Leading Researcher Natalia V. Bobkova; PhD, Leading Researcher Natalia V. Belosludtseva, and postgraduate student Dariya Yu. Zhdanova propose that the new method can be used to treat a wide range of neurodegenerative diseases characterized, like Alzheimer's disease, by mitochondrial dysfunction. It is also assumed that the proposed method can be used to prevent aging of the body. The data presented in the patent described above have been confirmed this year by joint research of American and German scientists (Alexander J.F. et al. Nasal administration of mitochondria reverses chemotherapy-induced cognitive deficits. Theranostics 2021; 11 (7): 3109-3130; DOI:10.7150/thno.53474).

The authors suggest that the use of a simple method of non-invasive delivery of functionally active mitochondria to the brain by their intranasal administration, which has now been used by other researchers, is promising not only for the treatment of brain diseases, but also to prevent age-related memory loss and disorders.
